Dubai polarises opinion more than almost any destination on earth. Fans say it’s the most extraordinary city on the planet. Critics call it soulless and artificial. Who’s right? Both, actually — and neither. Here’s our honest take.
What Dubai Does Genuinely Well
- Hotel value — Five-star quality at prices that rival four-star elsewhere. The hotel scene is extraordinary.
- Weather — October to April is genuinely perfect: 24–32°C, no rain, constant sun.
- Safety — One of the safest cities in the world. Solo travellers, women included, report feeling exceptionally secure.
- Food — 200+ nationalities living in Dubai means one of the world’s most diverse and high-quality restaurant scenes.
- Accessibility — Emirates flies everywhere, and Dubai Airport is excellent.
The Valid Criticisms
- It can feel artificial — The Palm, the indoor ski slope, the ski run at 45°C outside. Some find this thrilling; others find it uncanny.
- Limited “authentic” culture — Old Dubai is genuinely interesting but can be explored in a day. This is not a destination for deep cultural immersion.
- Car-dependent — Outside the Marina and Downtown areas, you need a taxi or car. Dubai walking is not a thing.
- Alcohol rules are complex — Available in hotels and licensed venues, but not freely on the street.
Verdict: Who Should Go
Dubai is absolutely worth it for: beach-and-city combination holidays, families, first-time Middle East visitors, people wanting luxury hotel experiences at reasonable prices, and anyone who appreciates grand ambition. It’s less suitable for those seeking authentic local culture, backpacker-style travel, or a quiet escape.
