Soneva Fushi is not just a resort — it is a philosophy. Founded in 1995 on a commitment to sustainability and barefoot luxury before either was fashionable, it remains one of the most extraordinary hotels anywhere in the world.
The Concept
“No news, no shoes” is the Soneva motto. There are no TVs in the villas. Shoes are deposited at the “Shoe Shrine” when you arrive. You spend your days barefoot in paradise and that’s exactly the point.
The Villas
70 beach and water villas, some exceeding 2,000 sqm. Each is constructed from natural materials with open-air bathrooms, private pools, and a personal Mister/Miss Friday (the Soneva version of a butler). The Water Retreat villas have slides into the lagoon and glass-floor master bedrooms.
Dining
Soneva Fushi has a dedicated chocolate room, a cheese cave, an ice cream parlour, six restaurants, and the famous Cinema Paradiso — an open-air cinema on the beach with free popcorn. Food quality is exceptional throughout.
Sustainability
Solar-powered, zero single-use plastics, on-site waste management facility (the “Eco Centro”), and a coral restoration programme guests can participate in. Soneva walks the sustainability talk unlike many resorts that just talk about it.
Price
Beach villas from $1,400/night, Water Retreat villas from $2,800/night. Not cheap — but this is one of those hotels where the price matches the experience.
